We have identified a number of schools In the Negombo area which are badly in need of assistance.  We will make a financial contribution to each school for every volunteer that we place with them.  We aim to help schools with equipment and facilities that they clearly lack.  So by booking with us, you will know that you will be making a significant difference to many children in this area.  It is very important that children in Sri Lanka can speak English well.  Without English they are unlikely to get a good job as English is now so much in demand because of the free-trade economy.

Skills needed

You don't need any formal qualifications but you must have a genuine love of children and education.  Any experience working with young people would be invaluable.  You must be able to use your own initiative and work without guidance. You must also be patient, resourceful, kind, hard-working and imaginative.  You will have to use a number of teaching methods such as formal textbooks, conversation classes, songs and games.

Typical Volunteer Day in Sri Lanka

- Breakfast at 6.45am (Sri Lankan or Western)
- School starts at 7.30am (we will provide you with transport to school if appropriate at a small extra cost)
- Mid morning break at 10.30am
- End of school at 1.30pm
- Lunch at 2pm

Optional activities in the afternoon

There is the opportunity to give extra lessons to children in the afternoon.  Most of the children in Sri Lanka have extra tuition in the afternoon as they are desperate to learn more.  Therefore, anything extra that you could give would be very warmly received.  There is also the opportunity to help adults to learn English in the afternoons.  In this part of the country many are involved in the Tourism industry and therefore any lessons that you could give would make a huge difference.

Alternatively Negombo is right by the Indian Ocean so you could either spend time on the beach or at a pool at one of the many hotels in the area. You return to host family for dinner and have the rest of evening to yourself.
