Responsible Tourism in Sri Lanka

We, at The Unique Travel Company are totally committed to Responsible Tourism in all its meanings.  We are totally passionate about Sri Lanka and continually strive towards it betterment.  We feel that tourism should benefit the local communities by providing work for the locals, but should also help conserve the environment that those Tourists are visiting by sustainable travel.

We have a number of Projects across the Island where we have already given aid to people to help themselves.

We are currently providing English books to a variety of schools in the Negombo area and providing toys and equipment to an Orphanage for Disabled Children in the Negombo area.

We do not encourage our customers to give sweets to the children especially in towns as it encourages begging when the children should be in school learning. Instead, it is our intention in the future in very poor areas to help some of the more able children who want to learn with resources for learning.

It is not our policy to visit shops everyday. We have several places that we will take you to which will show you some of the best handicrafts that Sri Lanka has to offer, such as a wood-carving shop, a gem factory, a silk shop and a spice garden. We do not receive commissions from any of these places for any purchases that you make. We have built up a good rapport with each of these establishments and therefore as a customer of The Unique Travel Company, you can be assured of getting the best value for money.

It is not our policy to encourage our customers to take pictures of, or to pay to have pictures taken with wildlife that has been chained up or is in captivity. The best place for wildlife is in the wild.

We are a truly ethical company giving our staff a decent living wage unlike many of our competitors. All our Tour Guides are local Sri Lankans who are Tourist Board approved and qualified and who are as passionate about Sri Lanka as we are and who will show you the real Sri Lanka. There are also many activities that you will do that will not only help the local communities but turn your holiday into an amazing experience – a holiday of a lifetime!

We feel that the costs of many operators is so high, it puts off the very Tourists the Island desperately needs. We deliberately set our prices much lower than many other operators to encourage people to travel to Sri Lanka. However, the quality of the service that you will receive will not be compromised in any way. We are happy to make a smaller profit than our competitors – we feel this is true Responsible Tourism.
