Option 1 - Children with no relatives

Firstly, you could work in an orphanage with children who do not have any relatives. This may involve working in a Children's Home housing 30 children aged between 5 and 16 years old. These children's homes do not get much in the way of government funding and as a result rely heavily on charitable donations to keep going. You can make a real difference to these children's lives by simply playing with them and giving them some love and attention as many of the staff do not have the time to do so. Any English lessons and help with homework will also make a huge difference. You can also generate creative play through singing, dancing, games, sport, drama and art.
Skills needed

You do not require any special skills however any experience working with children will be invaluable. You must be able to work on your own initiative and without formal guidance. You must also be very patient, compassionate and resourceful.

Option 2 - Physically & Mentally Handicapped Children

Sri Lanka has a population of about 20,000,000 people within which there are over 1,500,000 that have a disability, most of whom, live in rural areas. This is undoubtedly a massive problem. So secondly, we can offer placements at Children's Homes that care for children with disabilities providing a loving and caring environment that allow the best possible avenues for the children's growth and development. These are non-governmental organizations so rely entirely on donations. You would care for mainly infants, children and young adults but some residents are in their 50s too. They are grouped according to their age, skills and levels of interaction. Some of the Homes are for severely handicapped children while others are for more abled children and young adults and are taught some academic subjects along with life skills. Emphasis would be given to agriculture studies and craft work but the students also engage in a variety of other activities such as music, dancing and cooking. The focus here, being to emphasize the development of independent living skills and skill bases training so that in the longer term, students will be able to assimilate into the wider community in a seamless transition. One Home in particular, is run as a farm where the more able young adults live and work.

Skills needed

You don't need any specific qualifications or experience although working with people with disabilities would be useful. The following would be needed by all volunteers: perseverance, patience and love for those who are the most vulnerable in society.Good physical fitness is vital for lifting and handling of some of the children and much of the work can be physically and emotionally demanding. It is very important to be flexible and patient, as it may take much longer than you expect to accomplish just about everything. You will need to be resourceful because you won't have the same access to materials as perhaps you may have been used to.The main qualification would be a willingness to adapt to a new context and provide loving care for the residents and as such could be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
