Projects of Unique Travel Company

Since the nearly Thirty year long civil War ended over a decade ago, Tourism begun to grow and today it brings a lot of foreign revenue and is easily one of the largest industries in the Country. On our Tailor Made Holidays and the Off the Beaten Track Tour, we visit the little Villages, Towns and remote areas in the Country. Being a company believing in sustainable Tourism, we started some Projects to help the less privileged Sri Lankans who need a helping hand.

How we help Sri Lanka

We are committed to “responsible tourism” and are very actively involved in a range of projects to help the people of Sri Lanka. We are unique in that we are personally involved in each of our projects.

Building Tsunami Houses For 3 Families

Having travelled to Sri Lanka in August 2006, Sue was devastated to see so many Tsunami victims still being housed in tents, a year and a half after the Boxing Day Tsunami.  On returning to the UK, she decided to write to all her friends and relatives explaining the situation.  To her amazement she raised £4,000 to build some new houses.  With the help of Peter and a local builder, The Unique Travel Co was able to build 3 houses for Tsunami victims.

Peter was very careful to verify all the records to make sure these were true Tsunami victims, and both Sue and Peter have since visited these 3 families to see how they are getting on.  We also received a letter from the Divisional Secretariat thanking us for building the last house.

Feast Day

Once a year Peter’s family hold a feast day. Over the year, the family has saved money with which they buy staple goods and then distribute them to poor people in the neighbourhood. This has been a family tradition for many years now and last year, they were able to help over 120 people with rice, lentils, canned fish etc.

Work for villagers in the Giritale area

We commission a number of village women (who are unable to work as they have very young children to look after) to decorate recipe cards for us which we then offer for sale to our customers. The pay they receive can mean all the difference to their families. Any small profit that we make is then used to help the very poor children in the neighbourhood with shoes, books, and other things for school.
