Drive to your beach hotel overlooking the stunning INDIAN OCEAN

Free day to relax on the beautiful beach and its quiet location.

Day 3

Drive to Dambulla (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and visit the fascinating DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLE – this is the largest painted cave temple in the world and dates from the 1st century BC. There are 5 caves containing about 200 statues of Lord Buddha.

Free time to enjoy this beautiful hotel and its fabulous location.

Overnight at Vil Uyana, Sigiriya

Day 4

Jeep tour of Polonnaruwa. You take the back roads to see the real Sri Lankan life & feel the pulse of the people. You stop at shops & fields to get familiar with the village life.

Do the HIRIWADUNNA TREK (this is a bullock cart ride through the villages, then crossing a lake on an “oruwa”(canoe with outrigger) to a banana plantation and then have lunch in a traditional mudhouse in the local village.

Day 5

Visit POLONNARUWA (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – this was the second capital city of Sri Lanka and dates from 10th – 12th century AD- it contains some of Sri Lanka’s most famous monuments including the Gal Vihara and the Rankot Dagoba.

Do a GAME DRIVE INTO MINNERIYA NATIONAL PARK to see the “Gathering” of elephants (can be up to 300) that takes place between June and September but there are still large numbers to be seen at other times of the year. There are many birds to be seen as well as other animals.

Day 6

Visit the iconic ROCK FORTRESS AT SIGIRIYA (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – this was once the capital of Sri Lanka and dates from 5th century AD. The rock is 650ft high and from the top there are breath-taking views of the surrounding plains and the mountains in the distance. There is much to see here including water gardens, frescoes, lions paws and of course the palace on the top.

Drive to Kandy. On the way, visit a SPICE GARDEN to see how Sri Lankan herbs and spices are used.

KANDY was the last Royal capital city of Sri Lanka and is said to be its most picturesque city as it nestles in the hills with the lake at the bottom.

Overnight at Elephant Stables, Kandy (Vanilla or Citronella Suite)

Day 7

Drive to Pinnewala and visit the ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE to see about 70 rescued elephants playing in the river.

In Kandy, take a leisurely stroll around the beautiful ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS.

Watch the CULTURAL SHOW – this is a performance of Kandyan dance, music and costume and including activities such as fire-walking (rites performed by witch doctors to “cure” their patients!).

Day 8

Visit the TEMPLE OF THE TOOTH (UNESCO World Heritage Site) by the lake – this is said to house “Lord Buddha’s Tooth”- you would visit at the time of the Puja (ceremony of offerings).

Drive to Nuwara-Eliya up through the mountains covered in thousands of acres of TEA PLANTATIONS passing Ramboda Falls.

Visit a TEA FACTORY to see how tea is produced.

Have time to explore the old colonial town of NUWARA ELIYA also known as “little England”. This is the heart of the tea growing area and at about 6500ft, is much cooler.

Day 9

Drive to Yala.

Do a late afternoon GAME DRIVE INTO YALA NATIONAL PARK where it is likely you would see elephants, spotted deer, water buffalo and many birds and if you are particularly lucky, a leopard (you have the best chance here of anywhere in the world of seeing a leopard) or even more lucky a sloth bear

Day 10

Drive to your fabulous hotel on the South-west coast near Bentota. On the way,

Visit a TURTLE HATCHERY to see 1, 2and 3 days old turtles.

Visit the DUTCH FORT AT GALLE which was used to house the spices.

Days 11 – 13
