Day 2
Drive to Wilpattu and do a GAME DRIVE INTO WILPATTU NATIONAL PARK. This is a very beautiful Park with dense jungle opening onto wide lakes. It is particularly famous for its populations of leopards and sloth bears but you may see other animals such as crocodiles, water buffalo, and many birds. It isn’t as busy as many other Parks.

Day 3
Visit the ancient city of ANURADHAPURA (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – this is the first capital city of Sri Lanka and dates from 3rd century BC. Some of the buildings here are vast and the tallest temple when built was only second in size to the Pyramids.

Day 4
Visit the iconic ROCK FORTRESS AT SIGIRIYA (UNESCO World Heritage Site)– this dates from fifth century A.D. There is much to see here including water gardens, frescoes, Lions paws and of course the Palace on the top where there are fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.

Day 5
Free morning.
Do a GAME DRIVE INTO MINNERIYA NATIONAL PARK to see all the elephants that gather on the shore of the lake there. There are particularly large numbers between June and September (when water gets in short supply) where there can be up to 300 elephants. However you will also see animals such as water buffalo, spotted deer and many birds.

Day 6
Visit DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLE (UNESCO World Heritage Site)– this is the largest painted cave Temple in the world and dates from the first century BC.
Visit a SPICE GARDEN to see how Sri Lankan herbs and spices are used in Ayurvedic medicine.
Drive to KANDY – this was the last royal capital city of Sri Lanka and is said to be the most picturesque as it nestles in the hills with the lake at the bottom.

Day 7
In Kandy, visit the ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS to see the many indigenous trees of Sri Lanka.
Free afternoon to do as you wish.
In the late afternoon, visit the CULTURAL SHOW – this is a performance of Kandyan dance, music and costume.
Visit the TEMPLE OF THE TOOTH (UNESCO World Heritage Site)– this is the most venerated temple in the world for Buddhists and is said to be where Lord Buddha`s Tooth relic is kept.

Visit a TEA FACTORY to see how tea is produced.
Overnight at The Lavender House, Pussellawa – this is a chance to experience what it is like to stay in an old colonial tea planter’s bungalow.

Day 9
Drive up through mountains covered in TEA PLANTATIONS up to NUWARA ELIYA (this is a really beautiful drive) have a chance to explore Nuwara Eliya (this is known as Little England) – this is where the colonials used to escape to when it was too hot on the coastal plains and has a very British feel about it. Perhaps take afternoon tea at The Grand.

Drive to the South West coast.
On the way, visit PINNEWALA ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE – where you can see about 50 rescued elephants playing in the River.

Day 12
Take a BOAT RIDE ON THE MADU RIVER where you can see the mangrove swamps and fishermen casting their nets as well as all the wildlife.
Visit a TURTLE HATCHERY to see one, two, and three day old baby turtles.
Visit the DUTCH FORT AT GALLE (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – this is where they used to house the spices. Take a walk a round the ramparts and visit the buildings such as the Dutch church, the lighthouse etc.
